Glow-worm Boiler Installation in Welling – Back Boiler Upgrade

Our client in Welling contacted us because their home was still relying on an outdated back boiler unit situated behind an open fireplace. These older systems are notoriously inefficient and occupy significant space within the chimney breast, which was severely limiting the living room layout. The customer had noticed that the central heating was becoming increasingly unreliable, with the unit frequently locking out and struggling to meet the hot water demands of their growing family. Upon our initial site survey, we identified that the back boiler was reaching the end of its operational life. The pipework and venting were severely corroded, posing potential carbon monoxide risks due to the age of the installation. Furthermore, the unit was prone to kettling, caused by a massive buildup of sludge and debris in the primary heat exchanger. It was clear that a complete system overhaul was required to ensure the property remained warm, safe, and energy-efficient for the future.

We began the installation by safely decommissioning the back boiler and carefully extracting the unit from the fireplace. To ensure the new system would run at peak efficiency, we performed a thorough power flush of the existing radiator circuit to remove years of accumulated magnetite and sludge. We then installed the modern Glow-worm Energy 30kW combi boiler in a more convenient location, utilizing a vertical flue kit to vent through the roof space. Our engineers meticulously re-piped the system to current Gas Safe standards, incorporating a magnetic system filter to protect the new heat exchanger from future debris. After connecting the gas supply, we pressure-tested the entire pipework network to confirm integrity. Finally, we commissioned the boiler, fine-tuning the gas valve settings and performing an exhaustive flue gas analysis to ensure optimal combustion efficiency. The system was balanced, and the customer received a full handover on the new digital interface.
