The Problem
We received a call from a Dartford homeowner whose Ferroli Modena HE boiler was displaying a persistent flame failure lockout code. The boiler would attempt to fire, the ignition would click, but it would fail to establish a flame and lock out within a few seconds. The customer had been resetting it repeatedly for a week before calling us.
Flame failure faults on Ferroli boilers can have several causes — a faulty ignition electrode, a worn or contaminated flame sensor, a gas valve issue or occasionally a problem with the PCB. The symptom of clicking ignition with no flame hold usually points toward the electrode or sensor rather than the gas valve.
What We Did
Our engineer attended the following morning. A visual inspection of the ignition electrode showed it was heavily worn and had a small crack in the ceramic — meaning the spark was intermittent and insufficient to reliably light the burner. The flame sensor was also showing signs of oxidation.
We replaced the ignition electrode assembly and cleaned the flame sensor, then tested the boiler through multiple firing cycles to confirm reliable ignition and flame hold. The boiler fired first time on every test cycle and the lockout code cleared immediately.
The entire repair was completed within the hour.
Result
Boiler firing reliably with no further lockouts. Customer had been putting up with the problem for over a week — wish they'd called us sooner.
